Foster update - January 31, 2011

Wondering what dogs are new to rescue and who has recently found their forever home? This weekly update is your key to keeping track of LOYAL's adoptable dogs!

NEW ARRIVALS

BB Bandit is a 5 year-old male Border Collie mix currently residing in Ottawa, ON. He is being returned to rescue after being adopted out as a puppy, and is now in need of a new forever home. Border Collies are a notoriously high energy breed that require lots of attention and exercise. Bandit would do best as the only pet in an adult only home, or a home with teenagers, that can provide him with all the mental stimulation he so craves.

Bob is an adorable 1-2 year-old male Terrier mix (likely a wire-haired Chi mix) who weighs a whopping 4 lbs.! He hails from Kentucky originally, and is now on the search for his new Canadian family. Bob is obviously a cutie-pie, and he is good with other dogs and cats. Older, respectful children (12+) only due to his size though; he's just a littlin' and can easily be injured! Bob is being fostered in Toronto, ON.

Delilah is a 2 year-old female Yorkie who arrived this weekend straight from an Ohio puppy mill. So happy to be out of the mill, Delilah can be found napping the day away on a nearby lap, or carrying around one of her stuffed toys like a baby in her Mississauga, ON foster home. Delilah is good with other dogs and cats, but should not be in a home with small children due to some possessiveness with her humans and her food. After a rough start to her life, she deserves tons of love and affection in her new forever family.

Kenzie is a 4 year-old female Pomeranian who has been lucky enough to be out of the horrible puppy mill that she was living in, and is now safe and sound with a new foster family in Ottawa, ON. While still a shy and nervous girl (who could blame her?!) she is quite sweet and is doing well with the dog and cat in her current home. Older kids only though, as she is still timid and scared of new experiences given her very sheltered life to-date. We're sure this pretty girl will come around in no time and make an amazing pet to the right family.

Peanuts is a 1 year-old female Papillon who was recently returned to rescue through no fault of her own after finding what she (and we!) thought was her forever home. Peanuts came to us originally from an Ontario shelter as two of her legs had been broken. After a successful surgery on one leg (that left a metal pin in it), the other leg healed on its own, and we are told that it does not immediately require surgery (though it could one day down the road in her life). For now, Peanuts is living it up in her Mississuaga, ON foster home and is enjoying sweet condo life with her two foster Yorkie brothers. She would love to go to a home with other dogs to play with and with no small children, please!

Reba is another 4 year-old Pomeranian who came to us very recently from a puppy mill. Like her mill-mate, Kenzie (above), Reba is a shy, timid girl who will need a patient and loving home to help her overcome her fears about people. Being treated so poorly by humans all her life, a girl has to be cautious! Reba is enjoying her new life in her foster home in Peterborough, ON, and would love to go to a quiet home without children. She is good with dogs and with cats (what funny creatures they are!) and has a very sweet, submissive personality.

Foster update - January 24, 2011

Wondering what dogs are new to rescue and who has recently found their forever home? This weekly update is your key to keeping track of LOYAL's adoptable dogs!

NEW ARRIVALS

Scruffy and Stumpy are both 7-year-old male Yorkshire Terriers who were surrendered to the rescue when their owners were unable to care for them. They are sweet, friendly, healthy boys who are good with cats and other dogs. They are being fostered in Ottawa, ON, and while they did come in as a bonded pair we have discovered that they are more suited apart and can be adopted into separate homes. Scruffy is the little guy on the left and he is a bit shorted (ironically) than his brother Stumpy on the right. Both are adorable little guys who are very deserving of new forever homes to call their own.

ADOPTED

Mitsy the Yorkie and Minu the Italian Greyhound were lucky enough to find their forever homes this week!

Dog of the week: Rocco!

Rocco is a 7-8 year old Chihuahua Rat Terrier mix that, through no fault of his own, finds himself in need of a new forever home in 2011. Rocco was surrendered to the Quinte Humane Society before Christmas, and a caring LOYAL volunteer took him in when the shelter deemed him "unadoptable".

Rocco is a special needs dog, and will require an experienced home to deal with his needs. Rocco is blind and, his vet believes, at least partially deaf. Don't let his special status fool you though, Rocco is still very spry for his age and condition!

Rocco is a sweet, affectionate little man (well, if you consider 25 lbs. "little"!) who is good with other dogs and cats. Due to his special needs, however, she should not be in a home with young children. He is house-trained and crate-trained and loves to go for walks; he is great on a leash as well.

The ideal home for Rocco would be a home with experience with special needs dogs where he can live out the remainder of his years in safety and comfort.

For more information on Rocco, visit his Blog, check out his Facebook page, visit our website, or send us an e-mail at info@loyalrescue.com.

Foster update - January 17, 2011

Wondering what dogs are new to rescue and who has recently found their forever home? This weekly update is your key to keeping track of LOYAL's adoptable dogs!

NEW ARRIVALS

Bella is a 9-month-old female Boston Terrier / French Bulldog mix who came to us recently along with her brother Boris (see below) from an Ontario shelter. Bella is a shy girl who has not have much socialization in her life, unfortunately, but she is coming out of her shell quickly and exploring her new surroundings. She will need continued work on building her confidence and exposing her to new, safe situations in her forever home.

Boris is a 9-month-old male Boston Terrier / French Bulldog mix who is the brother to Bella (above). Boris came from the same Ontario shelter as his sister, and much like her he has had little training or socialization and needs some confidence building. Both dogs are good with other dogs and are house-trained. Cats and kids are unknown, but children under 10 will not be considered for safety reasons.

Mina is an 18-month-old female Terrier mix who arrived last weekend from a Kentucky high kill shelter where she found herself on the urgent rescue list. Mina is a sweet, friendly girl who is good with other dogs, cats and kids. A fenced yard is needed for Mina as she is still a flight risk. Mina loves to chew on dog toys and nap on your bed with you; a very sweet lady!

Pickles is a 2-year-old male Pekingese who arrived just this weekend from a Kentucky high kill shelter. He was surrendered by his owners for "aggression", which is the most ridiculous thing we've heard because he's been a dream in his foster home - house trained, sleeps on the bed at night, gets along with dogs and cats, and likes strangers! What aggression?! Pickles is a sweet, funny little guy who loves to be cuddled, but who is equally happy to snooze on a nearby dog bed or next to you on the couch. He is low-maintenance (aside from daily brushing, please!) and well-behaved. Oh, and did we mention ADORABLE??

Stevie Wonder is an 8-week-old male special needs Miniature Pinscher. See, Stevie had an eye infection that was not treated early on in his life and as a consequence he has gone blind. Stevie is a typical puppy - friendly and affectionate - but he will require a special home that will know how to handle a blind dog and provide a loving, safe and consistent home to him. He will need to visit an eye specialist before adoption, and all questions regarding his needs can be directed to his foster mom through his profile on Petfinder.

Foster update - January 11, 2011

Wondering what dogs are new to rescue and who has recently found their forever home? This weekly update is your key to keeping track of LOYAL's adoptable dogs!

NEW ARRIVALS

Jed is a 4.5 year old Bichon who recently came to us from Burlington, ON. He is an owner surrender who is fine with other small dogs, but who should not go to a home with cats or children. He is affectionate and sweet, and quite the little lap dog. He would do best in an adult home, perhaps with another small dog for companionship. He is approx. 15 lbs. and he is hypoallergenic.

COURTESY CROSS-POSTS

The following pets are cross-posted on the LOYAL website as a courtesy to other rescue groups:

Vanna is a 3-year-old special needs Shephard who is currently residing at Westminster Pet Sanctuary. She is a friendly dog who would do well in most housing situations, including with a retired couple. She is very gentle. Please contact the Sanctuary directly to submit an application.

Four kittens are also with Westminster, and are suffering from Cerebellar Hypoplasie (or Wobbly Cat). These sweet, active kittens hardly know they are special needs, and get around quite well. There are two males and two females currently available for adoption, and they are 12 weeks old. Please contact the Sanctuary for more information.

Dog of the week: Boomer!

Boomer is a Rat Terrier mix that was adopted from LOYAL a few years ago, but who is being returned to rescue. He is again searching for his forever home with a loving family.

Boomer is a 5-6 year old Rat Terrier that is approx. 25 lbs. Boomer gets along very well with other dogs, and is fine with older, respectful children (the young child in his home scares him quite a bit, though there have never been any issues, so kids under 5 are not suitable for this guy). Boomer should not go to a home with cats as he has had very little exposure to them.

Right now Boomer is home a full working day without issue (8 hours), but a home where someone is around more often (no more than 4-6 hours alone) would be ideal. Who wants to be home alone by themselves all day anyway? When overly excited or scared, Boomer can exhibit some submissive urination, which is not at all uncommon. This can be easily managed with a calm, quiet environment and some simple confidence building.

Boomer is crate-trained and house-trained (a few post-new-home accidents aside!), and loves to be with his humans and having his belly scratched.

If you think you can provide a loving, stable home to Boomer, please submit an application through our website, or send an e-mail to info@loyalrescue.com for more information.
