Did you know?

According to the 2008 and 2009 National Urban Animal Surveys there are more than a million cats and dogs being placed into Canadian homes each year. Of these homing episodes it appears that adoptions from legitimate animal welfare organizations (like LOYAL Rescue, as well as many other Ontario rescues and shelters) account for 11%, registered breeders account for 8% and compliant retail establishments (i.e., pet stores) are thought to add another 16% of these placements. Only these 35% of placements come from inside the industry system of compliant homing organizations.

If these numbers are accurate, that means that almost 65% of the cats and dogs placed into Canadian homes may come from breeders who could fly under the radar for business licenses and taxes, whose litters are not identified in any industry system and whose operations may not be compliant with accepted industry standards.  In other words, puppy mills and backyard breeders!

Remember that by shopping in pet stores (though they may be "compliant retail establishments"), you are fueling this breeding industry that views dogs and cats as comodities that can be bought and sold for a profit.  Some breeders may be "reputable" and registered, but with thousands of shelters animals dying in shelters every year, there really is no legitimate reason for continuing to breed these animals.  Just ask any shelter worker how many stray cats they see every year, and how many are needlessly euthanized, and they can tell you why there is no need to continue breeding!

Adopt, and save a life!  Do not support pet stores, backyard breeders and puppy mills!

Foster update - April 4, 2011

Happy April everyone!  Spring is almost here!  Hooray!

Wondering what dogs are new to rescue and who has recently found their forever home? This weekly update is your key to keeping track of LOYAL's adoptable dogs!

NEW ARRIVALS

Meet Gillian!  Gillian is a sweet 4-year-old Pomeranian who was rescued from a puppy mill in Ohio a few months ago. Gillian has had a very rough start to her life, and she has spent this time in her foster home learning to love and trust again.  She loves to be held and cuddled, and is quite sweet and loving once she gets to know you.  She is still fearful and shy of strangers, but is coming around.  A quiet, calm home would be preferred as she can be skittish and nervous of new surroundings.  Gillian loves the company of other dogs and does well with cats.  If you think you can provide a patient, loving, happy home to Gillian, submit an application through our website.  Gillian is being fostered in Milton, ON, and her adoption fee is $375.

Meet Rosalyn!  Rosalyn is an adorable 1-year-old Terrier mix who recently arrived from Burlington Animal Control.  See, Animal Control does not have an adoption center, so unless Rosalyn's family came to claim her, she would need to find rescue or risk being euthanized.  Luckily, LOYAL Rescue stepped in and now Rosalyn is in a loving foster home in Niagara Falls, ON.  Our best guess is that Rosalyn is a Terrier mix of some sorts; she is not hypoallergenic and does shed.  She is good with other dogs and with cats, though her foster home is unsure at this time if she is good with children.  She is brand new to rescue, so her bio will be updated as she settles in.  Her adoption fee will be $425.

ADOPTED

Dog of the week: Reba!

Meet Reba!

Reba is a 4-year-old female Pomeranian who arrived into rescue approximately 2 months ago with two other Pomeranians - Gillian and Kenzie - all rescued from an Ohio puppy mill.

Reba has come a very long way in the last 2 months, and while she can still be shy with strangers, she is learning every day that not all humans are bad.  Despite her progress, Reba is still a timid girl, and would not be suitable for a home with children, or a family with a hectic, busy lifestyle.

Reba enjoys the simple things in life like treats, walks and cuddles, and enjoys the company of other calm, easy-going dogs.  She is almost completely house-trained, and is proud to report that she is improving daily.

Reba would do best in a quiet, adult home, perhaps with another like-minded doggie companion for company.  She should be in a house (not an apartment, as she can be quite vocal) with a secure, fenced yard.

Don't have a doggy companion for Reba?  Why not consider adding another LOYAL, like-minded dog to your family!  Have you seen Kenzie, Reba's mill mate?  What a sweet pair of Poms they'd make!

Applications for Reba can be submitted through our website, or send us an e-mail for more information.
