Weekly Rescue Round-up: November 28, 2011

Welcome to our Weekly Rescue Round-up where we update you on all the rescue happenings within LOYAL over the last week! Thanks for stopping by the blog, and be sure to share or like this on Facebook and tweet about it, too! Spread the LOYAL love!

EVENTS

LOYAL Rescue has no upcoming events.  Please keep an eye on our Events page for future happenings.

HOLIDAY SEASON

Christmas is fast approaching!  Wondering what to get the person who has everything?  Why not donate to LOYAL Rescue on their behalf?  It's quick and easy, and a tax receipt issues immediately when you donate securely online.  Visit our Donate page for donation options, and give the gift that keeps on giving to our rescued dogs in need this holiday season.

The holidays are often a busy time for rescue in terms of owner surrenders, while the intake of applications can slow down as people go away on holidays.  As we are volunteer run, our volunteers also go away to spend time with friends and family.  Our administrative process can take a little longer than using during the month of December and into early January, and we thank everyone for their patience.  Please know that our goal is to get dogs into loving homes and we are working as quickly as we can with our limited resources.

Please note that many dogs are given as gifts during the holiday season.  LOYAL Rescue does not condone pets as gifts to children or to adults, and our adoption process is not negotiable.  Everyone in the home, including all that will be in contact with the dog, must be a part of the adoption process.  A volunteer will still conduct a home visit and will meet all those in the family.  Surprises for family members are not suitable for our rescued dogs, and LOYAL will not accept applications from interested adopters who are looking to give a dog or dogs as a gift to someone else. Please do your research and put a lot of though into your decision before you decide to adopt a dog (or any animal) this holiday season.

That being said, we welcome all interested adopters to submit applications through our website.  We would love to find loving, committed homes for our rescued dogs for the holidays.  Some have never had a family to call their own, and the best gift that a rescued dog could receive this holiday season is for a forever family to call their own!

SUPPORT US!

LOYAL has a few promotions in the works right now and we desperately need your help!  We are participating in a Click Challenge where the rescue/shelter with the most votes by December 4, 2011 will win $1,000 for their organization through Helping Homeless Pets.  LOYAL Rescue desperately needs this money, so please click on the below photo to show how you can help.  You can vote daily, so please share with family/friends and VOTE VOTE VOTE!

As well, Funny Farm Boutique will be donating $5 from every collar and every leash purchase to LOYAL Rescue! Here is a link to the promotion blog post for more details. Happy shopping!

Last, but not least, we are still participating in this round of the Shelter Challenge.  If All Breed Canine Rescue wins the grand prize, $1,000 in much-needed funds will be donated to Helping Homeless Pets and split among its rescue groups.  You can vote twice/day on all devices, so please continue to support HHP and LOYAL Rescue!  Visit the HHP website for additional details.

DOGS OF THE WEEK

In honour of November being Adopt-a-Senior-Dog month, last week's Dogs of the Week were Chico and Willis, two of our senior foster residents.

NEW ARRIVALS

Beans is a young (under 1 year), male Silky Terrier-x.  Beans is full of...well...Beans!  This young, spunky character gets along well with dogs and cats, and has oodles of energy to burn.  An active, experienced family would be best suited for this handsome youngin' who could use some ongoing obedience training.

Bentley is a 1.5-year-old, male Shih Tzu-Maltese-x.  This friendly fellow just adores people (including kids!), and would be best suited to a family where someone is home all or most of the day to spend time with him.  He enjoys the company of other dogs, and is working on not jumping up on people when they come over to say hello.

Dominique is an adult, female Shih Tzu-Maltese-x.  She gets along well with other dogs and is a well-mannered, polite young lady.  Nique (as her friends call her) is house-trained, very trustworthy when home alone and loves to sleep in the human bed at night.   She is looking for a family with a lot of love to give, so that she can give that much love and more in return.

Yes, we have puppies!  These beautiful Newfoundland-Lab-Great Dane-x puppies arrived into rescue a few weeks ago at the tender age of 1 week.  They will not be available for adoption until 9 weeks of age (mid-January 2012), but we are now accepting applications from interested adopters.  There are 4 boys - Sarge, Scotlund, Sherman and Simon - and 4 girls - Sable, Sapphire, Satin and Sierra.  Please ensure that you have done your breed research before applying; Newfoundlands and Great Danes are large-extra large breed dogs and will require appropriate space and exercise.  We anticipate receiving a high volume of applications for these puppies, and those whose families and homes are most suited will be screened.

Timmy is a 5-year-old, male Yorkie.  This sweet, shy man is very submissive with people and other animals due to a rough start to life, but he wants so badly to be part of a family and to finally be loved.  He prefers women to men right now, so home with a patient and understanding family is crucial so that Timmy can learn to trust again.  Timmy is only 5.5 lbs., so older children who are respectful of his size and his space are recommended.

Applications for any of the above dogs, or any of our available dogs, can be submitted through our website.

PENDING

Angie, Clara and Tuxedo have been approved to forever homes and are currently pending adoption. We are no longer accepting applications for these dogs. Thank you for your interest!

Dogs of the Week: Chico and Willis!

As we are nearing the end of November, which just happens to be Adopt-a-Senior-Dog month, this week's Dogs of the Week are two of our resident seniors - Chico and Willis!

Chico is a 14-year-old, male Chihuahua.  His foster mom reports that he is super sweet and super friendly, though could be characterized as a bit of a cat chaser (but we won't hold that against him).  It is, however, all curiousity, and this guy does not have an aggressive bone in his 8 pound body, so this could easily be corrected with some positive reinforcement.  Cats are our friends, Chico!  He enjoys the company of other dogs, but would prefer a home without small children due to his tiny stature and his advanced age.  Do not let the numbers fool you - Chico is a little spitfire and can keep up with the resident youngins'!  He loves to be with his humans - either following them around or sleeping on an available lap - and gives some of the best cuddles in town.  If you are looking for a tiny heartbreaker in your life, look no further than Chico!

Chico is being fostered in Ottawa.

Willis is a senior (we don't know an exact age but we'd wager he is 10+), male Rat Terrier mix.  Willis has a pretty sad story to tell, we're afraid.  He was found on the side of the road in Kentucky where he had collapsed from dehydration.  He was emaciated and in pretty rough shape all around, but fortunately an angel was watching over sweet Willis and he was guided into loving arms.  Now an official Canadian citizen, Willis prides himself on his speedy recovery and his ongoing trust and love for humans.  Not every dog could bounce back from the condition that Willis was in, and that just shows how much spunk and life this pooch has left in him.  Rat Terriers are a hearty breed that has an above average life span, and Willis is definitely "breed standard" in that respect!  Though he is deaf and that makes him "special needs" all Willis really needs is a forever family to love him, protect him and give him all the cuddles and kisses he deserves.

Willis is being fostered in Uxbridge.

If you are interested in submitting an application for either Chico and Willis, please visit our website or send us an e-mail for more information.

Happy adopting!

NEW ARRIVALS

The following dogs are new to rescue, and are now available for adoption on our website:

Zorro is a 13-year-old, male Poodle-Schnauzer mix currently being fostered in Mississauga. Don't let his age fool you - this little guy is as spunky and fun-loving as they come! In his own words, he is the good thing that small packages come in, and he is patiently waiting for a new family to call his own. Surrendered to rescue when his owners had to enter a retirement residence that did not allow pets, Zorro is a healthy, happy lap dog that enjoys his walks and a warm lap to curl up on. You can learn more about Zorro on his foster mom's website - {digby&sassy} - or via e-mail.

Also, our Facebok fans may have noticed 8 new arrivals that made their foster care debut this past weekend.  These 8 Newfoundland-Lab-Great Dane puppies were rescued by Animal Rescue Corps. from a town in Quebec and will be available for adoption at approx. 9 weeks of age.  They are just shy of 2 weeks old now and will be posted on the website soon.  In the meantime you are welcome to visit their photo album on our Facebook page for updates!

Winter Woofstock

Are you planning on attending Winter Woofstock at the Direct Energy Centre? This year - the second year for the Winter version - it takes place on November 19-20, and there will be just as many awesome vendors, shops, demonstrations and rescue groups present as last year.

LOYAL will, of course, be in attendance with a booth in the rescue village, so if you intend to come out with your pooch and shop, be sure to pop by booth no. 831 and say hello to our volunteers and some of our foster dogs who will be there representing us.

As well, be sure to stop by the Peachy Keen Pets booth no. 520 for your custom, local, handmade collars, leashes, harnesses, sweaters, bandanas and much more.  PKP is a good friend of LOYAL and has been very supportive in the past of our rescue.

PKP also upcycles old band, movie and generally funky (think sparkly Elvis or Star Wars) t-shirts into cool doggy t's, so if you have a shirt in good condition that you would like to donate, be sure you bring it on by the PKP booth and mention that you are a LOYAL fan.  For every usable shirt donated, PKP will donate $2 directly to LOYAL dogs!

Former LOYAL rescue, Bella, loves her upcycled Peachy Keen Pets tee!

If you cannot locate the PKP booth then you are free to donate your t-shirt at the LOYAL booth and a LOYAL rep will bring all donations over to the PKP booth on LOYAL's behalf on Sunday afternoon.  Just mention that it's a donation for Peachy Keen Pets (or for Grace) and it will make its way into the proper hands.

So clean out those closets and scour those boxes for old, retro t's and support a great cause!  If you do happen by the PKP booth but don't have a shirt to donate, please show your support and let Niki, PKP's owner and designer, know how great her stuff is and how awesome she is for supporting such a worthwhile cause.

Hope to see you all (and your pooches) at Woofstock!

Dog of the week: Phillip!

Meet Phillip!

Adorable, wee Phillip is an 18-month-old Rat Terrier-x. This spunky, playful fellow was surrendered to a shelter in Kentucky and rescued by LOYAL Rescue shortly thereafter.  He has been spending the last few months in his Oshawa foster home with his foster siblings, awaiting his forever family to come along.

Phillip is a friendly, outgoing guy who enjoys the companionship of other dogs.  He would make a great family dog!  He loves to play with squeaky toys and to run around the yard. A fenced yard would be ideal since this little man has oodles of energy to burn.  He would also love a like-minded play mate to chase him around and to cuddle with.

Apartments are not recommended as Phillip can be quite vocal in his playing, though he does respond well to corrections.  Some basic puppy obedience would likely do wonders for Phillip's manners and leash skills, as he is very quick to learn and a willing, enthusiastic student.

Check out this adorable video of Phillip playing with his foster sister!

Overall Phillip has a wonderful, sweet temperment and would love to have a family to call his very own.  If you would like to submit an application to adopt Phillip, please visit our website or send us an e-mail with any questions.

The following dogs are new to foster care and are now available for adoption. Applications can be submitted through our website

All 3 new arrivals this week came to us from a puppy mill in Quebec.  As always, LOYAL Rescue is very proud of the work that we do to end mills, and we are glad to offer these 3 dogs a new lease on life and the opportunity to finally have families of their own!

Angie is a 3-year-old, English Cocker Spaniel. She is a little shy at first, but once she gets to know you she is a very friendly girl. She gets along well with other dogs and with cats, and would be fine with older children.

Lady is a 3-year-old, female American Cocker Spaniel. She is a little shy at first, but once she gets to know you she is a very friendly girl. She gets along well with other dogs and with cats, and would be fine with older children.

Tuxedo is a 1-year-old, male Cocker Spaniel. He is very laid back, mild mannered and affectionate, and he enjoys the company of other dogs, cats and kids.

Dog of the week: Sucre!

Meet Sucre!

Sucre is a very sweet, male Miniature Pinscher who is approximately 3 years old.  This handsome fellow gets along very well with other dogs - big and small - and with cats.  He would be fine with older children who are respectful of his small size; he's only 8 pounds, you know!

Sucre originally came into LOYAL Rescue as a stray, and has been enjoying his time in his Ottawa foster home while he awaits his perfect forever family.  Sadly, someone tied him to a tree and left him in a park, but fortunately a good samaritan found him and brought him into a Montreal shelter, where he was there transferred into our rescue.

Sucre loves getting cuddles and kisses, and one of his favourite things is to sleep at night in bed with his humans.  He also loves to sleep next to the fireplace and hates being cold (who doesn't?!).  He loves to curl up on a nice warm lap, is very quiet and gentle, and is fully house trained.

In short, Sucre's a catch!  His foster mom even thinks he'd be great with an owner who can take their pet to work because he's so easy-going (and he could almost fit in your pocket! hehe), and he just loves going for walks and showing off his excellent leash skills.

If you think this sweet, sugary boy could be just what your family is looking for, please submit an application for adoption through our website, or contact us for additional details.  Sucre is waiting!
