Dog of the Week: Zorro!

Meet Zorro!

This sweet, recently-turned-13-year-old Poodle mix is the most loving, quirky, hilarious little man you'd want to meet. He spends most of his days snoozing away on his favourite fuzzy blanket, and around 6pm he's full of beans and spends hours sniffing around the house and playing with his toys. He sleeps in the big bed from 10pm-8am (but will gladly sleep later if you let him!), and then goes outside for a quick bathroom break and then it's back to bed he goes!

Don't let all that sleeping fool you though...Zorro is one spunky senior!

He loves chew bones and will often be found tossing one around and chasing after it. He is more than capable of keeping up with the bigger, younger dogs on walks, but truth be told he's a home body that prefers a quick sniff around the back yard and then it's back to warmer climates. A jaunt around the block every day would be more than enough for this guy to keep trim and active, even if he tries to tell you otherwise!

Zorro gets along well with other dogs (though dominant or bossy, large dogs do scare him and he may run away) and cats, but should not go to a home with small children because of his age. He travels well in the car (though this was not always the case) if his blanket is nearby or he has a safe lap to sit on.

Please do not let Zorro's age turn you off. This is one healthy, happy pooch who is very low maintenance and who, if provided with proper vet care and kept active, could have many years left in him. As dogs' go, he's only at retirement age! He is currently alone a working day (9:30am-5:30pm) and is learning to use pee pads; he will also let you know when he needs out. Someone who is home all day, part-time or who can take some time to get Zorro situated in his new home would be ideal so that the transition to a new family is not too scary for him.

For more information on and photos of Zorro, please visit his foster mom's blog, Facebook page, or send her an e-mail.

Applications for Zorro should be submitted through our website.

Please share Zorro's story and let's find this adorable pooch a family!

Max's surgery. Please donate!

Meet Max.

Max, a 7-month-old Doberman mix, found himself needing rescue through no fault of his own. After a serious injury to his leg, Max's owners were unable to pay for the urgent surgery that he needed and he was taken to the vet to be euthanized. Fortunately the vet notified LOYAL Rescue and Max was able to have his surgery paid for and to join our foster program while he recovered and awaited a new forever family.

Max is now living with his foster family in London and is recovering nicely from his surgery. He will be on “bed rest” for a while, but we are told that he is an excellent patient and loves all the extra hugs and attention he has been getting!

Unfortunately Max’s surgery set LOYAL back $1,500 (and counting). Often our expenses for our foster dogs exceed that which we “recoup” in adoption fees, and in some cases, like with Max, those costs can be crippling to a rescue.

We are hoping that, through the generous donations of our fans and supporters, we will be able to make back some of the money that was spent on Max’s vet care.

100 per cent of the proceeds from all donations go directly towards the vetting of our dogs, and any and all donations made in Max’s name will go to pay off the very large vet bill to-date that he has accumulated, as well as any future bills for his care.

How can you donate?

That’s easy! You have a few options.

1. Donate through the ChipIn that has been set up in Max’s name below. All money donated will go directly into LOYAL’s vetting account. ChipIn uses Paypal for secure online payments directly from your bank account or a credit card.

View the ChipIn here: http://loyalrescue.chipin.com/maxs-leg-surgery.
Just click on "ChipIn" and you can donate directly through the website.

2. Donate online through CanadaHelps.org and receive a tax receipt for your donation. This money is held in trust in a vetting account on behalf of Helping Homeless Pets. Instructions on how to donate online through CanadaHelps are available above under the “Donate” tab.

3. Send a cheque made out to LOYAL Rescue Inc. to the following address, which “Max” in the memo line.

LOYAL Rescue Inc.
171A Rink Street, Suite 199
Peterborough, Ontario
K9J 2J6

* Please note that donations made through ChipIn or via cheque will not receive tax receipts. If you would like to donate via cheque and require a tax receipt, please visit our "Donate" tab for additional information*
Thank you, as always, for your generous support.

2011 IN REVIEW

Thanks to your amazing, generous support and the help of our dedicated, fantastic foster homes and volunteers, LOYAL was able to rescue and re-home 167 dogs in 2011. That's 167 happy tails and even more smiling humans with a new forever family member. We're pretty proud of our accomplishments, and we are grateful for every family that offers a loving home to our pooches. Let's hope 2012 is equally, if not more, phenomenal. Here we go!

A new Helping Lost Pets Click Challenge will be starting soon. LOYAL did not win the last Challenge but we had many supporters voting daily to get us that much-needed $1,000 for our dogs. Stay tuned for details on the next Challenge!

Secret Santa

Thanks to the great idea of our Newsletter Coordinator and the participation of some wonderful LOYAL fans, over 35 dogs were able to take part in our first ever Secret Santa!

Here are some LOYAL foster dogs enjoying their spoils, courtesy of some very generous folks, on Christmas morning!

Dexter was so excited he couldn't even wait for the bag to be opened; he just dove right in!

Mickey modeling his new collar and leash on what appears to be one very comfortable bed!

Lucy is brand new to rescue and missed the Santa assignments, to awesome volunteer Ann was her Secret Santa this go-around!

Adorable, senior Molly isn't posted on the site yet, but that didn't stop her from being spoiled (not-so) rotten this Christmas! Look at all those goodies!

Lovely Penny has gone through a lot in her life and was so happy to spend this Christmas safe and warm in her foster home. Lots of presents was an added bonus, too!

Senior Willis was seriously spoiled by his Santa and is sticking close to his gifts, testing each one out in turn!

Ricky might not be too sure about the camera, but he's absolutely sure that he has an awesome Secret Santa who spoiled him this year!

Cece and Mister got loads of awesome stuff from Santa, and, like good foster siblings, they were happy to share with each other!

Clara and Gino were a bit overwhelmed at first with all the presents to open, but they managed to pull through! Clara even got the most amazing gift of all - a forever family just in time for the New Year!

Zorro was so exhausted after opening all his gifts that he picked the most comfy one - a fuzzy red blanket! - and passed out on it! Christmas is exhausting!

And last but not least, the gorgeous Dane-x puppies rescued just a few months ago (and now ready to go to forever families) got a humungous box of goodies that they just couldn't wait to open!

For some dogs this was the first Christmas they have ever celebrated, and for all of them it was their very first Christmas with their new foster families. Thank you to everyone who made this a very merry Christmas for our foster dogs and foster homes alike; you are all amazing, generous folks and we're lucky to have you in our LOYAL family!
