Dogs of the week: Sokki and Tristan!
Meet Sokki!
Sokki is a 7.5-year-old female Chihuahua that was rescued from a shelter in Kentucky when she was taken in for euthanization. The shelter staff saw potential in Sokki and contacted LOYAL Rescue for help. Sokki's foster mom stepped in and has been helping this sweet girl recouperate from her very troubled past.
With a lot of patience and a lot of love, Sokki has overcome many obstacles as well as many of the fears that had been holding her back from living a balanced life. Now this brave little Chi is on the lookout for a new family that can provide her with the same level of security and assurance that her foster home has over the last few months. Sokki may still be a work in progress, but she is making huge strides every day.
Don't be put off my Sokki's shy facade, because this girl is ready and willing to stroll on into her new forever home and be the newest member of your family.
Sokki loves the company of other calm dogs and should go to a home where a like-minded pooch will be able to keep her company and help her build her confidence. An adult home with no children would make Sokki happiest where she can live out the remainder of her retirement years in calm serenity.
Sokki may have a few demands but she also has oodles and oodles of love to give the lucky family that chooses to offer her a permanent home. Could you be that lucky family?
And now, meet Tristan!
Tristan is a 5-year-old male Chihuahua who came to us as an owner surrender when his human parents divorced and neither was able to continue caring for him. Tristan's foster mom stepped up and now he has a temporary home while he waits for his new family to come along.
This sweet little man just loves people and wants to be where you are. He is good-natured and quiet, and just wants a warm lap to curl up on. If you're around, Tristan won't be far behind!
Because Tristan has had no exposure to-date to young children, an adult-only home or a home with older, respectful children is recommended.
Tristan is house-trained, loves to go for walks and is great in the car. He's got the whole package!
If you think a friendly, well-behaved 10-pounder could be what's needed to complete your family then look no further because Tristan's bags are all packed and he's ready to move into his new home!

Happy is a 1-year-old, male Schnauzer-Yorkie mix stray from the Montreal SPCA being fostered in Peterborough. He is a friendly, outgoing guy who is good with other dogs, cats and kids.
Magic is a young, female Maltese mix stray being fostered in Aurora. This friendly, happy-go-lucky girl is new to rescue and still settling in, so stay tuned for more details.
Phillip is an 18-month-old, male Rat Terrier owner surrender from Kentucky, being fostered in Oshawa. This spunky, energetic boy is friendly with other dogs and with kids, and would love a fenced yard to run and play in.
Toby is a 3-year-old, male Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix owner surrender being fostered in Iroquois. This friendly, easy-going guy gets along with the other dogs and cats in his home, as well as with kids. He is still settling into his foster home, but is so far proving to be a well-behaved boy.

Dog of the week: Gracie!
Meet Gracie!
Gracie is a 3.5-year-old Chihuahua that came into rescue in January 2011 from a shelter in Kentucky when she was rescued from a local puppy mill along with other dogs. At first Gracie was unsure of her surrounding and quite timid, but once she learned to trust her foster family she turned into a loving, affectionate girl.
Now that Gracie has a home to call her only - even if only temporary while she waits for a forver family - she has settled in wonderfully. She is house-trained, crate-trained and loves to go for walks, and her foster mom reports that she has wonderful leash manners.
Gracie loves to be with her humans, and even though she sleeps in her crate at night, she would also love to be able to have her own warm spot on the human bed. Despite being a quiet girl, she can also be quite playful, and enjoys spending time with the other small dogs in her foster home.
Because of Gracie's tiny stature and because we do not have any information on her past before she came into rescue, older, gentle children only will be considered; we do not recommend a home with small children for Gracie. She would love another small, friendly dog for companionship and a fenced yard to romp and play in.

Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week
Every day, thousands of special needs animals die in shelters, and month after month they wait far too long in foster care for a forever family to adopt them.
Many factors can contribute to a pet being viewed as "less adoptable" including a physical disability such as a missing limb or eye, or being blind or deaf. Being old can cause an animal to be passed up by adopters, as can an incurable illness, a minor ailment or even the colour of their fur.
To help promote these unusual (or, in some cases, far too common) animals, Petfinder has designated September 17-25, 2011 as "Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week".
Petfinder asked their member shelters and rescue groups to nominate a very special pet in their program who is waiting for a forever home. You can check them out in their online gallery, or use their pet-search tool to find a special pet for adoption near you.
LOYAL Rescue has a number of senior and special needs animals in our foster program, including Tina the Poodle-x who requires drops in her eyes a few times a day, Rocco the senior Rat Terrier who is blind and partially deaf, Willis the senior Rat Terrier who is deaf, and Molly the young Schnauzer who has seizures that are managed by medication. These are just a few of the amazing dogs currently living with our dedicated foster families who are waiting for a forever home of their own.
Special needs animals are just that - incredibly special - and we strongly encourage you to visit Petfinder and look into offering one a forever home. Just because an animal requires special care and is considered "less adoptable" than others does not mean that they are less worthy of love or an amazing forever family of their own. Black Dog Syndrome
Black Dog Syndrome (also known as Black Dog Bias) is a phenomenon that is witnessed by shelters and rescue organizations across the globe. Day after day black dogs are passed over for adoption and rescue in favour of light-coloured dogs.
The theories on why this syndrome exists range from the depiction of large, black dogs in film as aggressive, to the dogs showing poorly in photos causing adopters to pass them up for more "photogenic" dogs. Some also believe that superstition surrounding black dogs (similar to that associated with black cats) could be to blame. Rescue groups have been trying to battle this syndrome for years, but the power lies with the public and those who are in the market for a new furry family member.
Please spread the word about this syndrome and the plight of black dogs seeking adoption. If you know someone who is looking to adopt, tell them all about the amazing black dogs that we have in our foster program, and encourage them to see past the stereotypes and give a black dog a chance at a forever home. Regardless of the reasons for this phenomenon, the reality is that black dogs are being passed up for the opportunity to find forever homes, and remain in shelters and foster care longer than other dogs. LOYAL Rescue, specifically, has had a number of black dogs in rescue for a very long time. Sorry for the delay in foster updates, but I have been on vacation for the past 2 weeks. Here we go!

NEW ARRIVALS
Adorable Pippi is a 3-year-old, female Papillon being fostered in Peterborough. Pippi is good with dogs and older children, but should not go to a home with cats.
Bowser is a 3-year-old, male Yorkie-Tibetan Spaniel mix being fostered in Peterborough. Bowser is new to rescue, so please stay tuned to his profile for additional information. An adult home (no children) is recommended for Bowser.
Dexter is a 2-year-old, male Yorkshire Terrier being fostered in Toronto. Dexter has been an extremely popular boy, and we are no longer accepting any applications for him.
Freddie is an 8-month-old, male Chihuahua being fostered in Walkerton. Freddie is a sweet-natured boy who gets along with dogs, cats and children.
Gracie is a 3.5-year-old, female Chihuahua being fostered in Peterborough. Gracie is good with other dogs and would likely be ok with tolerant cats (may chase), and should go to a home with older, respectful children (she is quite small) or adults only.
Peggy Sue is a 4-month-old, female Pug mix being fostered in Peterborough. Peggy is a sweet girl who is good with other dogs, cats and children.
Scarlett is a 1-2-year-old, female Terrier mix being fostered in Milton. Scarlett is a playful girl who gets along with other dogs, cats and children. We are processing a very promising application for Scarlett, and likely will not be accepting additional applications at this time.

Welcome to our weekly foster update, where you can find information on dogs that are new to rescue, pending adoptions, and the dogs lucky enough to find their forever homes. As always, you are welcome to contact us for more details, or if you have any questions.
NEW ARRIVALS
Adorable Pippi is a 3-year-old, female Papillon being fostered in Peterborough. Pippi is good with dogs and older children, but should not go to a home with cats.
Bowser is a 3-year-old, male Yorkie-Tibetan Spaniel mix being fostered in Peterborough. Bowser is new to rescue, so please stay tuned to his profile for additional information. An adult home (no children) is recommended for Bowser.
Dexter is a 2-year-old, male Yorkshire Terrier being fostered in Toronto. Dexter has been an extremely popular boy, and we are no longer accepting any applications for him.
Freddie is an 8-month-old, male Chihuahua being fostered in Walkerton. Freddie is a sweet-natured boy who gets along with dogs, cats and children.
Gracie is a 3.5-year-old, female Chihuahua being fostered in Peterborough. Gracie is good with other dogs and would likely be ok with tolerant cats (may chase), and should go to a home with older, respectful children (she is quite small) or adults only.
Peggy Sue is a 4-month-old, female Pug mix being fostered in Peterborough. Peggy is a sweet girl who is good with other dogs, cats and children.
Scarlett is a 1-2-year-old, female Terrier mix being fostered in Milton. Scarlett is a playful girl who gets along with other dogs, cats and children. We are processing a very promising application for Scarlett, and likely will not be accepting additional applications at this time.
Sokki is a 7-year-old, female Chihuahua being fostered in Peterborough. Sokki is a quiet girl who enjoys the company of other dogs, but who would do best in a calm, adult home. Children are not recommended.
PENDING
Adoptions are approved and pending for Corky's Kramer, Corky's Newman, Baby, Black Matt, Bouncing Tigger, Brittania Ice, Fox, Maggie, and Wally. We are no longer accepting applications for these dogs. Thank you for your interest.
We are processing very promising applications for Dexter, Gambit, Monty, Numa and Scarlett. Additional applications may no longer be accepted for these dogs, so please contact us before submitting an application.
ADOPTED
Brownie's Veronica, Regis, Herby, Pugsley, Smokey, Buster, Corky's Jerry, Corky's Elaine, Corky's George, Chloe and Marina were adopted in the last few weeks. Congratulations!
