Dog of the week: Monkey!

Monkey is a 2.5-year-old male, black Miniature Poodle. Monkey is good with dogs and kids, and while he is fine with cats as well, he will chase them. He will even, on occasion, sleep cuddled up with a senior Poodle in his foster home. Cute!

Monkey is an owner surrender; his owners were no longer able to care for him, so they surrendered him to LOYAL Rescue.
Monkey is an active guy that loves his walks - as many as he can get! Monkey would do best in a home with a fenced yard where he can run and play, and would love to be adopted by an active family that will make time to play with him and provide him with the much-needed attention and exercise he craves. Having a human family member home part or all of the day would be a bonus because Monkey has a bit of separation anxiety and can be vocal; because of this, an apartment or town house would not be a suitable home for Monkey.

Monkey does not like to be crated, and because he is trustworthy in the house (some barking aside), does not need to be. He prefers to be with his humans, and is happy to snooze on the couch with you all day long. Monkey is fully housetrained and hasn't had a single accident in his foster home!

If you think you could be the lucky, active family to adopt Monkey and provide him with tons of love, attention and adventures, please contact us for more information, or submit an application through our website.

Dog of the week: Rudy!

Check out handsome Rudy! Rudy is a 6-year-old Schnauzer mix who finds himself in need of a new, forever home.

When Rudy is not hanging out with his foster parents, he loves to go camping with his foster sister, Suki, and he even attends summer school obedience classes! He's a busy guy!

Rudy is good with other dogs of similar size to himself, but should not go to a home with cats or kids. Rudy tends to be shy when meeting new people - especially men - and he should go to a home that is experienced with fear-based aggression. But when Rudy gets to know you, oh man, you'll have a friend for life!

Rudy is house-trained, crate-trained and loves to go for long walks; he's fantastic on a leash!

For more information on Rudy, visit his blog at http://www.sukisfosterfriends.blogspot.com/. Oh yes, Rudy's so cool he has his own BLOG!

If you think you're the family to finally provide Rudy the loving home he needs, please submit an application through our website at www.loyalrescue.com or e-mail us for more information. Rudy's waiting!

NEW ARRIVALS

Rosie
Rosie is a lovely 2-year-old female Bassett Hound / Beagle mix who is arriving next weekend from her current home - a shelter in Kentucky! Rosie is a friendly girl that is good with other dogs and kids, and who, through no fault of her own, came to a spot in her life where she needs a new, forever home. To visit Rosie's blog (yep, she has her own blog!), please go to http://adopt-a-loyal-dog.blogspot.com/search/label/Rosie. Stay tuned for more info as Rosie arrives into rescue!

COURTESY CROSS-POST

Teddy
Teddy is a courtesy-cross for Southern Ontario Animal Rescue (SOAR) - a foster-based dog rescue not unlike LOYAL. Teddy is a senior American Eskimo who finds himself searching for a new forever home. Teddy has been with SOAR in foster care for 18 months now! Wow! Don't let Teddy's advanced age fool you - he's still full of pep and can play with the best of them! Teddy has some dominance issues that his foster home is currently working on, and an experienced dog-owner would be best. If you are looking for a happy dog to cuddle and share your days with, Teddy is your man! Contact SOAR at http://www.soar.designimpact.ca/ for more info.

Dog of the week: Rosa!

Meet Rosa!

Rosa, aka "Little Mouse", is an adorably sweet senior Chihuahua who is looking for her forever home. Rosa is approximately 10 years old, and weighs a staggering 5 whole pounds! Can you believe it?!

Rosa is great with other dogs and is fine living with cats, too! Because Rosa is so tiny, and because she is still quite shy of strangers, she should not go to a home with children. Rosa needs a quiet, calm home, with a new family that is willing to be gentle and patient with her while she settles in.

Because Rosa has mild separation anxiety and can get a little vocal if left alone, an apartment or townhouse is not recommended. She is, however, fantastic on a leash and sleeps happily in her crate all night. If allowed, she'd love to share a bed with you, too!

For an older gal, Rosa is still full of energy and is always trying to play with the small dogs in her foster home. If you think you could provide this sweet little senior with a loving, stable, forever home, please contact us!

Halloween Pet Safety Tips

Lions and tigers and bears? Oh my! Halloween may be oodles of fun for kids and adults alike (who doesn't love bucket loads of chocolate?!), but can be a very scary time for your pets. Please keep them in mind this October 31st. Here are a few safety tips to consider when the ghouls, goblins and witches start their trek through your neighbourhood:

1. No tricks, no treats: That bowlful of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for dogs and cats!

• Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Symptoms of significant chocolate ingestion may include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased thirst, urination and heart rate—and even seizures.

• Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol sweetener can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, which leads to depression, lack of coordination and seizures. In cases of significantly low blood sugar, liver failure has been known to occur.

• Ingesting tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can pose a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockage.

2. A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise extreme caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.

3. Dress-up can be a big mess-up for some pets. Please don't put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it (yup, a few pets are real hams!). For pets who prefer their “birthday suits,” however, wearing a costume can cause undue stress.

4. If you do dress up your pet, make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. It should not constrict the animal's movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe, bark or meow. Also try on costumes before the big night. If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting him go au naturale or donning a festive bandana.

5. Take a closer look at your pet’s costume and make sure it does not have small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury.

6. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.

7. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn't dart outside.

8. IDs, please! Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can increase the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

Also, please remember to keep any outdoor dogs or cats INSIDE on Halloween night. There may be people out there that will try to harm your pet, so better safe than sorry!

Happy Halloween! Be safe!

Dog of the week: Marilyn

Marilyn is a sweet 12-year-old female Poodle-Schnauzer mix who came to us from a Quebec puppy mill. Despite her rough start to life, Marilyn is a very affectionate girl who is eager to please everyone she meets. Marilyn has special needs - she is deaf. She should go to a home that understands and is patient with her condition, understanding that she may startle easy because she cannot hear people approaching. A home with no young children is recommended. Marilyn is good with other dogs and with cats, but would love being the only dog in her new home so that she could get all of the love and attention that she deserves. A home with a fenced yard would be ideal because Marilyn could wander, and cannot hear you calling her back to the house. Safety first! Other than a grade 5 heart murmur (which her foster mom can explain in detail), Marilyn is a happy and healthy girl who would love to find her forever family soon; she has been in rescue far too long! If you think you could provide a loving, safe home for Marilyn, please contact us!

Alternatives to Halloween costumes for dogs: funky collars, bandanas and bow ties!

Not all dogs will stay cool, calm and collected when it comes to dressing up for Halloween. Here are a few things to remember when dressing your dog:

• When wearing a costume, can the dog see and breathe easily? A costume should not interfere with the dogs vision, hearing or breathing. NO masks!

• Check the fit around the costume neckline to make sure it's not too tight.

• Watch for chewing, pawing, or signs of discomfort while wearing a costume.

• If you're making a pet costume, use a lightweight fabric that won't cause a dog to become over-heated.

• Don't put beads, loose dangling accessories or other small objects on a costume. Nothing that can be chewed and swallowed, or be a choking hazard.

• A costume should not drag on the floor so that your dog can't walk without stepping on it.

• Never leave a dog wearing any kind of costume alone and unatteneded.

Most importantly, if your dog gets nervous and upset and does not like the idea of being dressed up, forget the costume idea altogether! Here are some fun, simple alternatives to Halloween costumes by Toronto-based company Peachy Keen Pets:

Safety pins!

Dracula!

Frankenstein!

Scary switchblades! Watch your back!

Fuzzy skulls!

Fun Halloween-themed collars!

Cute skulls!
