Pets are not gifts!
Choosing to adopt a new pet is a serious decision that deserves consideration. Pets should not be surprise gifts to spouses or even young children. They will benefit from being part of the decision process, rather than being surprised. You could also be making assumptions that your loved ones will want the same pet that you do - or any pet for that matter.
With Christmas around the corner, you may be thinking "new pet" under the tree, but it is almost always a bad idea. When your new pet joins your household, you should aim for a calm environment and a consistent schedule to make the transition smoother for people and pets.
Christmas time is almost never calm or consistently scheduled!
If your heart is set on a new pet at Christmas, consider 'surprising' your family with only pet supplies and the promise that the search for a new family pet will begin in January. THAT would be a happy new year for everyone involved - especially your newly adopted pet!
For more information on how you can add a new pet to your family, visit our website, or send an e-mail to info@loyalrescue.com.

Dog of the week: Alice!
Alice is a 2-year-old, female wire-haired Terrier-Schnauzer mix who came to us from Louisiana a few months ago. Alice is a very sweet and affectionate girl who has traveled a very long way in search for her new forever family.
Alice gets along well with other dogs, and is currently living in a home with cats. When she is not cuddling with her human foster family, she loves to romp around like a puppy and explore the world around her.
Alice’s housetraining is coming along very nicely and she is almost there, though she could use a bit of reminding once in a while. Alice enjoys going for walks and could use some ongoing training on her leash manners, though she is improving by the day.
Could you be the lucky family to adopt adorable Alice? Fill out an application today and give Alice a new home for the holidays!
For more information on Alice, or any of our available dogs, please visit our website, or send an e-mail to info@loyalrescue.com.

Last-minute stocking stuffers!
Looking for some last-minute stocking stuffers for your favourite pooch? Check out some of these fun, afforable items. These items can be purchased in-store at your local PetSmart, so run out and grab them before the holiday rush!
Hit your local store and pick up one of these cute Martha Stewart crochet squeaky toys in the shape of a reindeer, snowman, gingerbread man or an elf! Yes you read that right, Martha now does pets!
While you're in the Martha Pet section, grab one of these adorable ruffle coats for the furry lady in your life!
Red ruffles not your thing? How about this macho Nordic sweater or this Grey Barn sweater instead?
If your pooch has a sweet tooth, grab a container of these scrumptuous Canine Cousine treats! Nothing screams Christmas morning quite like cookies for breakfast!
Like to take your furry friend out for late-night walks in the snow? Since it gets dark so much earlier now (can we get a collective "bah humbug!"?), keep your dog safe in the snow with this blinking pet safety light. Never lose track of your dog in the snow again!
Does your dog hate the salt on the slippery sidewalks? Protect his or her feet with these Paw Tectors or Muttluks boots and you will have a very thankful walking companion!
Do you spend a lot of time out and about on adventures with your dog? Make sure he or she always has a food/water bowl on-hand with these collapsable Outward Hound Port-a-Bowls!
Planning a trip in 2011 with your tiny totable? Why not get them a Bergan Comfort Carrier and make their travel much more luxurious and comfortable? It's a tad too big for a stocking, but I'm sure they won't object!
Who likes stale food? Not me! Keep your pets' food fresh with these stylish Martha Stewart storage clips and can covers!
Hopefully those ideas inspired you to fill up your pets stocking with much-needed holiday items that will make them bark with gratitude. For more fantastic pet items, visit the PetSmart website!

Dog of the week: Otis!
Otis is a 6-year-old owner surrender Boston Terrier hailing from Windsor, Ontario.
Otis came to LOYAL when his owner had to move out of the country and could not take him with her. He was previously purchased from a garage sale (yep!) 2 years ago at the approx. age of 4 years. His history before that is unknown. Poor Otis! Through absolutely no fault of his own, Otis is now in search of a new forever home for the holidays.
Otis is an affectionate lap dog that is happy just to curl up on the couch with you and take a long snooze. Otis has no food aggression and is completely ok with his food bowl being touched, lifted and even taken away during meal time. He is getting along well with the other dog in his foster home (a 45 lb. terrier mix) and is not concerned at all with the resident cats. He finds them quite fascinating, and is happy to curl up next to one for a nap!
Otis has nipped at a child in the past, we are told, so would do best in a home with older, dog-experienced kids. Otis' foster family has seen no aggression whatsoever from him in their home, however, and he is quite happy to meet strangers and say hello. He gives lovely kisses and loves to snuggle under the covers at night.
Otis can be a tad skittish with loud noises and chaotic situations, so a quiet, calm, easy-going family would be best - we don't want him to be stressed out in his new life since he has been passed around so much. Otis has great leash skills, but should not be let off-leash in an unsecured area due to his skittishness; if scared, he may run. A fenced yard is not a must, but having Otis always secure and on-leash is.
Otis is healthy and happy, and patiently awaiting your application. Could you be Otis' new family this Christmas? Otis hopes so!
To speak to Otis' foster mom, please send an e-mail to grace@loyalrescue.com, or visit Otis' blog. Applications can be submitted through our website.

Dog of the week: Phoebe!
Meet Phoebe!
Phoebe is a sweet 2-3 year old Terrier mix. Phoebe came to us from a shelter in Ohio where she was picked up as a stray. Actually, she was picked up as a stray TWICE, but the second time her owner decided they didn't feel like coming to pick her up, so she was placed up for adoption.
Phoebe is very friendly and puppy-like. She gets along well with calm, submissive dogs, but is not a big fan of cats. It is unknown whether Phoebe would be ok with young kids (she tends to jump up during play and could hurt a very young child), but older, dog-savvy children would be fine. Her foster home thinks that she might like some kids to play with outside in a fenced, secure yard to get some of her energy out.
Phoebe is happy to run and play outside, but is also happy and quiet indoors. She loves to sleep on the couch next to you or on the floor by your feet, and is a well-behaved, easy-going girl.
Phoebe needs a bit of work on her manners and basic training (not jumping up, playing gently), and needs some work on-leash (she loves walks but tends to pull a bit), but overall she is a great, easy dog that is waiting for her forever family to come along. Could you be them?
If you would like to submit an application to adopt Phoebe, visit her Petfinder profile, or visit or website.

Foster update - November 15, 2010
Wondering what dogs are new to rescue and who has recently found their forever home? This weekly update is your key to keeping track of LOYAL's adoptable dogs!
NEW ARRIVALS
* We recently took in a number of small Yorkies as owner surrenders, so stay tuned for more details as they all settle into foster care. Some already have profiles posted, and are noted below *
Belinda
Belinda is a 3-year-old female Yorkie that was recently surrendered to rescue. Belinda is a friendly but shy girl who is good with other dogs and cats, and would probably be fine with kids. She is learning to not be scared of loud noises, and needs some work on her confidence. Overall though, she is a happy, sweet girl that would make a great companion.
Dudley
Dudley is a 4-year-old male Shih Tzu. Dudley is good with dogs and would be ok with older children (12+), but should not go to a home with cats. Dudley has not had a good start to life and should go to a calm, quiet, patient home where he will get tons of love and attention, and where he can live the rest of his days out in a stree-free environment. He can be protective of his foster mom, but does also enjoy the company of his foster dad. He is improving every day!
Jolie
Jolie is a senior (10+) female Yorkie that came to us recently from a Louisiana puppy mill. Jolie is a sweet little cuddle bug that is good with other small dogs and would be fine with kids as long as they were respectful of her age and size - she's only 6 lbs., after all! It is unknown whether Jolie is ok with cats, but she probably would be fine. Despite a really horrible life to-date, Jolie loves cuddles and attention, and will bounce around until you pick her up. She is a friendly girl who is looking for a loving family to protect her and make her final years ones where she does not have to live in a cage anymore.
Mitsy
Mitsy is a 2-year-old female Yorkie that came into rescue along with Belinda (noted above) and a few other Yorkies. Mitsy is shy and a bit nervous still, but is settling into her foster home well. She is good with other dogs and would be ok with older, respectful kids. Cats are unknown art this time. Stay tuned for more info on Mitsy as she settles into rescue.
Monty
Monty is a young male Toy Poodle who came to us from the local SPCA. Monty is shy but sweet, and is fine with dogs. Monty should go to an adult-only home, or a home with adult children. Monty was hit by a car before being taken to the SPCA, but is now on the mend in his foster home. He has had little exposure to men, but has expressed a dislike for them at this time. The ideal home for Monty would be an adult-only home with women, or where there is a man that can be very patient and understanding with him, giving him time to trust and get comfortable in his new surroundings. Dog experience is a must with Monty!
Vicky
Vicky isn't exactly new, but she was returned to rescue last week. Vicky is a 3-year-old female Chihuahua, originally from a Quebec shelter. Vicky originally arrived to rescue in 2008, had puppies, and was adopted in 2009. She was returned due to "allergies". Vicky is a sweet girl who loves cuddles and kisses, and to sleep under the covers with you at night. Vicky is housetrained and loves to go for walks. She would do well in an apartment or home, and is good with other dogs and cats. Only older children though - Vicky is very shy of strangers and requires a very patient owner who can work on her confidence building!
ADOPTED
The following dogs have recently been lucky enough to find their forever homes with loving families. Lucky them!

Dog of the week: Vicky!
Victoria (aka Vicky) is a 3-year-old tan Chihuahua. Vicky originally came to LOYAL in 2008 from a Quebec shelter as she was pregnant and very shy of people. After having and raising her adorable babies (and after they all found their forever homes), little Vicky was adopted in early 2010. Unfortunately Vicky's family discovered too late that they were horribly allergic to her, and after 8 months in their home, Vicky was again returned to rescue.
Vicky is a very shy girl when she first meets you, but once she knows that you are a good person and mean her no harm, she is all cuddles and kisses. Vicky loves to be with her humans, and does quite well with other dogs (as long as they are gentle with her) and cats. She cuddles with her foster brother (a 45 lb. Terrier mix - also a former LOYAL dog!) at night unless, of course, she is sleeping under the covers with her foster parents!
Vicky is 100% house-trained and very trustworthy when left alone. She is great on a leash and loves to go for walks. She is a sturdy 9 lbs., and has the sweetest little droopy right ear.
Vicky would do best in a home with adults only, or in a home with grown children that understand that she is very timid and fearful, and can run and hide when she feels threatened. Vicky is not a biter, but caution should be taken around small children as she is quite afraid of strangers, and being handled when she is fearful could add undue stress to her life. She is good in an apartment or a home (but would require a very secure yard with a fence). In short, Vicky is a pretty sweet, loving girl who just needs some patience and understanding while she adjusts to new surroundings. Once she trusts you, you'll be her best friend.
If you think you can provide a stable, quiet, loving home to Vicky, please submit an application through our website, or contact her foster mom directly for more information at grace@loyalrescue.com. Vicky's foster mom also keeps a blog about all her foster animals - Vicky included! - which you are welcome to visit.
